Criminal Law

If you are being charged with a crime, you are likely to find yourself in a panic. It feels like the world is crushing you down. The feeling wears you out. Nothing happens as it used to. Time has suddenly stopped!…

This is not a good feeling! You may find yourself depressed and easily irritated, perhaps in places you may not belong, full of people with whom you have very little in common. You may find your friends are suddenly not calling you back.

This is not the time to decide you can fix this all by yourself.

THIS IS NOT DO-IT-YOURSELF PROJECT!

THERE IS NO INSTRUCTION MANUAL! AND THERE IS NO CRIMINAL DEFENSE FOR DUMMIES BOOK EITHER!

It is hardly the best time to research legal definitions and procedural rules, such as bail review and dangerousness hearing, pre-trail conference and compliance and election, right for speedy trial and motion for habeas corpus, alternative dispositions and  suspended sentences, illegal search and Miranda rights, violation of probation and pretrial probation, continuing without finding and guilty finding, motion to dismiss and motion to suppress, alleged facts and supposition, and so on, and on, and on… . UFF!

Even if you know or believe that you are innocent, you may realize that the charges against you are serious enough to turn your world upside down and for a long or even indefinite time. One wrong decision may cost you your freedom and livelihood for years to come. You may face seasoned lawyers – the government prosecutors – who will try their best to make the charges stick.

The only do-it-yourself part is in doing yourself a big favor by… taking a breath…and  GETTING A LAWYER! If you are offered a bar advocate or a public defender, don’t refuse it. If you are thinking of getting a private lawyer, go for it.
